National vs. regional vs. local teams, explained

When you start comparing clubs, you'll see teams described as “national,” “regional,” or “local.” This isn't about how good a team is — it's about how far it travels to compete, which drives almost everything else: cost, time, and how many weekends your season eats up. Getting this right is the biggest single decision in picking a club.

What each level means

National teams travel the farthest and play the highest level of competition — including national-championship events like USA Volleyball or AAU nationals, and out-of-region qualifiers. Expect the most tournaments, multi-day trips, flights and hotels, and the highest cost and time commitment. This is the track for players chasing the top level of competition and college recruiting exposure.

Regional teams play a strong schedule but keep it within the broader region. Tournaments often mean an overnight hotel stay, but usually within driving distance — not flying around the country. It's a serious, competitive commitment with more manageable travel and cost than a national team.

Local teams stick to day-trip tournaments close to home. Less travel, less cost, and more weekends left intact — a great fit for players who want to compete and develop without a season built around travel, and for families keeping a lid on time and budget.

How it plays out in Minnesota — the real numbers

The travel level is by far the biggest driver of what you'll pay. Here's the typical season fee we see for Minnesota teams at each level, from this directory's data:

• Local: typically around $1,200 ($150–$6,460)
• Regional: typically around $2,300 ($250–$4,900)
• National: typically around $5,270 ($1,475–$7,810) — and that's before flights and hotels

An important Minnesota nuance: “travel” is relative to home

The same tournament can be a day trip for one club and an overnight for another. A big three-day qualifier in the Twin Cities is essentially local for a metro club, but a regional (hotel) commitment for a club in Rochester, Duluth, or Marshall. That's why we classify a team's travel level from its actual schedule relative to where it practices — not from the team's name or a generic label. A “national” in a team name doesn't make it a national-travel team, and we don't treat it as one.

How to tell what a team actually is

Team names are unreliable — clubs use “national,” colors, and numbers inconsistently. The honest signal is the schedule. Ask the club directly: How many tournaments require travel, how many require a flight, and does this team play any national-championship events? The answer tells you the real commitment far better than the label does.
